My LJ username actually came from a story I wrote years ago. It was a fairly lame, not very well-written story, but it had these creatures that I really liked that looked like a cross between a horse and a dragon - basically a horse with scales and awesome bat wings and telepathy, because, well, I could. :P Zanthlay was the name of the main one in the story.
A few years later I was signing up for a fansite for my favourite author (Isobelle Carmody ;)) and decided I didn't want to go with a name from her books because that might be confusing. Zanthlay was (strangely enough) the first name that came to mind.
I now tend to use Zieria, which is the name I used for a pet chook (chicken) I had a few years back. :P It came from the scientific name for a white wildflower - I didn't want to be cliched and call it Snowy or Whitey or whatever, but I guess I unintentionally went for pretentious instead. :P Either way, the name stuck. :)
