Hehe, I used beastly on purpose – it amuses me as well. =P And thanks for the suggestion – I think I will ff.net it. =D
It is rather Swallow/Elf isn’t it? =P Admittedly, the Swallow/Elf aspect was no accident – I thought it would be fun to imagine how Swallow felt about their first real meeting, and I always felt that her independence and spunk appealed to him. (And I used spunk on purpose, both because Swallow used it, and because I love that word in that context. =P)
But I maintain that it’s essentially canon, albeit with a slightly exaggerated slant to it – a section of TSK and all of the Swallow/Elf bits in Ashling made me see it this way – mostly from Swallow’s perspective, but also a little from Elf’s. =P
Consider: “Louis gave me a knowing look. ‘So that’s th’ way of it then. That Swallow.’ I stared at him in bewilderment for a minute, then realised what he was implying. Opening my mouth to give him the sharp edge of my tongue, I had a sudden clear vision of Swallow, leaning forward to kiss me after rescuing me.
‘Why did you do that,’ I had demanded, shocked. ‘Because I wanted to,’ he had answered with a handsome, sardonic smile that had thrilled me, though I would never have admitted it at the time.
I wondered if Swallow even remembered that kiss. [...] I knew that Swallow had spoken of me to the seers among his people, and though he had never told me what they said, these days, when we met, he was always very stern and serious and I wondered if I had not preferred the devilish gypsy who looked at me with admiration and kissed me without permission.” (TSK, 36-37)
